Children are beginning to learn the structures and rules of the number system. This involves understanding the link between grouping in ten and how numbers are written. The language of the teens numbers is the reverse of the written recording so require special attention. Multiplying by ten is the underlying structure of the number system and the key to how our numbers system works.
- Making Magic: This game uses the knowledge of the meaning of the digits in a teens number as 10+ something to make the teens.
- Jumping Ten: Understanding the base ten place value system allows you to add or subtract ten from any number. This is a requirement for adding or subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally.
- Going for Gold: Focus is on the multiplicative structure of the number system, the repeated grouping in tens. Students use collecting groups of ten ones to make a group of ten then ten groups of ten to make one hundred. How many times do you need to play the game to collect a $1000?
- Racing Tens: Children should be using the commutative law, place value knowledge and instant recall to solve the multiplication problems.
